The Orion 40" Monster Dobsonian can shed a lot of light on that little problem. The second member of our Monster Dob family is a 40" giant that offers almost 25% more light than it's little 36" brother or four times the light gathering power of a 20" telescope. This Monster Dob can gobble a lot of light — you'll get the point if you have the chance to see one up close or get lucky enough to gaze through one. With an entire meter of light collecting surface, the Orion 40 creates a lifetime of observing opportunities for Deep Sky enthusiasts. Compared to "ordinary" telescopes, deep-space objects will appear brighter and more detailed. Many objects now appear far more prominent and worth dwelling upon for extended periods. Here at last is a telescope with the light grasp to tackle elusive deep-space gems like the 4th member in Burbidge's Chain near NGC247 in Sculptor, or the anonymous galaxy near Mizar. Easier targets like Barnard's galaxy reveal emission patches in a mottled interior and M33 or M51 will fill the field of view with delicate spiral structure. The observing adventures never end with a Monster Dob! The Orion 40 shares the same advanced design, features and components as the other members of the Monster Dob family; as you might expect, everything about the Orion 40 is premium quality. The honeycomb mirrors are low-expansion borosilicate glass and hand figured by the World-Class Master Optician Normand Fullum. Enhanced optical coatings on the primary and secondary mirrors keep light loss to a minimum. ServoCAT Tracking and GoTo and Argo-Navis digital settings circles that automatically locate and track more than 29,000 targets are standard. If you ever run out of these targets, the GoTo system can be run from a laptop planetarium program. The advanced structural components and lightweight mirror keep the size and mass of the scope surprisingly small and provide a robust, yet compact and stable platform to study the sky. While our 36" Monster Dobs are truly transportable, and the 40" can be disassembled for transit, the additional mirror size and inherent weight will make this 40" Monster a more sedentary creature. Orion recommends you plan on creating a backyard observatory for this monstrous light-gathering machine — at the very least, plan to wheel it in and out of your garage if you have a dark sky location befitting this beast. The included pneumatic wheels are meant to be used on level pavement, not cross-country. Seeing may be believing, but seeing through Orion's 40" Monster Dobsonian telescope is unbelievable.
